This is an optical illusion. The camera is much larger than it appears. That's because Dave is much larger than he appears.


Dave Strohmaier unearthed this old typewritten tutorial created by Cinerama's Peter Gibbons for cinematographers preparing to shoot their first three panel Cinerama footage. While quite brief, Gibbons spells out the major considerations involved in composing images for the complex camera.
